I’m Gill Carding and I’ve been a Reader at St Giles for 2 years now. My husband and I “retired” to Shrewsbury 5 years ago, and we love it here in Shropshire’s county town!
It took me a little while to settle into a church, partly because I knew after a decade of being a Reader where we used to live just over the border in Wales, while working nearly full time for Chester diocese (the church in Cheshire, Wirral and south Manchester area), I needed a break away from church duties for a while. Also I found myself going off to live in Malaysia, where my husband was invited to do some work, so we spent a total of 9 months in Kuala Lumpur. What an unexpected adventure in our mid 60’s! Seeing the life and commitment of Christians in that culture was a wonderful experience. Now I’m enjoying being back at home, still doing some freelance work, singing, walking and gardening – and seeing my little grandson in London.
I relish coming to St Giles at the start a new chapter in its long history, with the arrival of Rev Andrew. I appreciate being part of a team shaping the future of the God’s church in this part of the town, as we seek to increase the ways we reach out into the local community. As well as taking my turn leading worship and preaching in Sunday services, I am involved with developing mid-week fellowship and study groups. I am particularly drawn to encouraging people in their journey of faith, wherever they may be in that.
